The item you’ve discovered is known as a magnolia seed pod. It is the fruit produced by magnolia trees after they finish flowering. At first, its appearance can seem strange. The pod typically has a cone-like shape, somewhat resembling a small pinecone, and usually measures between two and four inches long. Its surface often feels soft or slightly fuzzy, with colors ranging from gray to brown.
As the pod ripens, it begins to open, revealing vivid red seeds tucked inside. The bright color contrasts sharply with the muted tones of the pod, which helps attract birds and animals that help disperse the seeds.
2. What Magnolia Seed Pods Are
Magnolia trees belong to a large plant family that includes over 200 different species. They are well known for their large, fragrant blossoms and shiny green leaves. After the flowers bloom and eventually fade, small green cone-shaped structures start to develop. Over time, these structures mature into seed pods.
From late summer through early autumn, the pods gradually change in color and texture. They become firmer and more fibrous as they develop, eventually splitting open to reveal their seeds.
