Body Types: Are You an Ectomorph, Mesomorph, or Endomorph?

Body Type Blueprint: Understanding Your Somatotype

Your body type, or somatotype, is a classification system developed to describe the general skeletal frame and body composition of individuals. Understanding your type helps in tailoring nutrition and exercise plans that work with your genetics rather than against them.

How to Identify Your Type (The Wrist Test)

As shown in the diagnostic image, a simple way to estimate your bone structure and metabolic tendency is to wrap your thumb and middle finger around the smallest part of your opposite wrist.

A – Ectomorph (The Overlap)

Identification: The thumb and middle finger overlap significantly.

  • Physical Traits: Narrow shoulders and hips, thin bone structure, and very little body fat or muscle.
  • Metabolism: “Fast” metabolism; these individuals are often called “hard gainers” because they struggle to put on weight or muscle.
  • Strategy: Focus on calorie-dense foods and heavy strength training with longer rest periods.

B – Mesomorph (The Touch)

Identification: The thumb and middle finger just touch.

  • Physical Traits: Large bone structure, naturally athletic physique, and well-defined muscles. They typically have a “V” or “Hourglass” shape.
  • Metabolism: Efficient metabolism; they gain muscle easily and can lose or gain fat relatively quickly depending on diet.
  • Strategy: Balanced training (cardio and weights) and a moderate, high-protein diet.

C – Endomorph (The Gap)
