Treatment usually involves draining the cyst through a small incision under local anesthesia in the office to release the accumulated infected secretions. It is important to remove the entire cyst capsule to reduce the risk of recurrence.
After the procedure, a course of antibiotics is prescribed. After drainage, a small cavity remains, which should be cleaned with an antiseptic solution. A small bandage is then applied to aid healing, which generally progresses favorably.
In rare cases, patients may present with lumps in both ears. Both cysts can be safely removed using a similar, simple procedure with local anesthesia.
Never squeeze or manipulate the cyst with your fingers, as this significantly increases the risk of infection.
