How to safely control the spotted lanternfly:
If you find a spotted lanternfly, it’s important to kill it to control its population. Here’s how to do it safely and effectively:
Manual removal:
For larvae and adults: Crush the insects with your hand or a small object. Be sure to wear gloves, as residue may remain that can irritate your skin.
Egg clutches: Scrape them from the surfaces they’re attached to (e.g., tree trunks, rocks, or garden furniture) and place them in a bag of hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol. This will ensure the eggs don’t survive.
Sticky tape: Wrap tree trunks with sticky tape to trap larvae and adults. This prevents them from climbing branches to feed and lay eggs. However, this tape can also accidentally trap birds and other wildlife. Therefore, it’s important to cover them with a protective screen or cage.
Egg clutches: Use insecticides:
Insecticidal soaps, neem oil, or stronger chemicals can be effective in controlling lanternfly populations. Always follow the label instructions and consider the environmental impact before spraying insecticides, especially near crops or bodies of water.
Report sightings: If you live in a state where the lanternfly is considered an invasive species, please report any sightings to your local Department of Agriculture or State Board of Agriculture. They will provide further instructions based on the severity of the infestation and the affected area.
