I agreed to be a surrogate for my sister, but right after the birth my husband took me aside and said, “Please don’t give her the baby yet.”

But she didn’t load it.

She looked at me and, in a faint, trembling voice, said, “Thank you for taking care of him.”

I almost fainted right there.

I sat down across from her and held her a little tighter, and for a moment I couldn’t help but stare because, finally, my sister was coming back to me.

“Thank you for taking care of him.”
