That last message scared me more than all the others.
At six in the evening, Luis’s mother showed up at the hospital. Doña Teresa was a woman who attended daily Mass, carried a designer handbag, and cried easily. She demanded to see me.
They wouldn’t let her in.
Then she sent me an audio message.
“My dear, think of your children. Luis is desperate. A man can make mistakes, but you can’t take a father’s children away because of a fit of anger.”
A fit of anger.
That’s what she called an attempted murder.
Sofía listened to the audio and looked at me with fear.
“Are you going to believe him?”
That question destroyed me more than the recording.
Because my daughter had seen me stay silent so many times.
She had seen me smile at family meals while Luis humiliated me with comments disguised as jokes. She had seen me change my dress because he said it “didn’t suit me.” She had seen me apologize to avoid a fight.
I cupped her face in my hands.
“No, Sofi. I will never again confuse peace with silence.”
That night, the preliminary results arrived.
The doctor came in with Elena and Rebeca. She spoke slowly, carefully choosing each word.
“We found abnormal traces of a medication that can stimulate contractions. It was not prescribed by this hospital or by your gynecologist.”
Sofía began to cry.
I didn’t.
I couldn’t anymore.
The pain had turned to stone.
Luis didn’t just want to wait for a “complication.”
He had tried to induce it.
The police went to our house in Coyoacán. They found partially erased security cameras, a bottle hidden behind prenatal vitamins, life insurance papers signed two weeks prior, and women’s clothing in the study.
Paola’s clothes.
But the worst part appeared on Luis’s computer.
Searches.
“Postpartum complications hypertension.”
“Maternal death after childbirth.”
“How to Claim Spouse’s Life Insurance.”
Elena didn’t tell me everything right away. I knew from her face when she went out to answer a call in the hallway.
Meanwhile, Diego slept as if the world hadn’t tried to swallow him whole.
Sofía stayed by my side all night, clutching the blank tablet.
At dawn, Elena received a message.
Paola had been located.
And she was talking.
But before Elena could tell me what she had confessed, Luis showed up at the hospital again with a lawyer, his mother, and a court order demanding to see “his son.”
When his eyes met mine through the glass, I no longer saw the man I married.
I saw a furious stranger because a nine-year-old girl had ruined him.
And what Paola was about to reveal would change everything forever…
