What is the evil eye?
It is essentially a superstition or popular belief, found widely in many cities and civilizations. It is, in fact, a deeply rooted belief common in a wide variety of Hispanic-American and Mediterranean cultures.
According to this belief, a person is capable of causing harm, illness, and misfortune to another simply by looking at them. Therefore, when we are faced with that damaged or affected part, it is said that “the individual is looking, with a fixed gaze, or that they have been given the evil eye.”
That is, it is believed to be caused intentionally or to arise from the hatred or envy a person feels toward the “victim.” However, it is believed that there are cases in which the evil eye occurs precisely “involuntarily” (without a clear intention).
How to remove the evil eye?
Popular tradition holds that one way to remove the evil eye is through a prayer, which should always be said after making the sign of the cross. Of course, this prayer is a completely popular belief, which may not be true. However, it has been passed down from generation to generation to this day, likely because the intention with which people repeated it helped them fulfill themselves and protect themselves.
