Although many believe it to be a common insect that appears randomly, the drain fly, also known as the sewer fly or shower fly, is usually a sign of a plumbing problem. Its small size and slow flight often make it unnoticed at first, but when it begins appearing frequently in the bathroom or near the sink, it can become a persistent nuisance.
This curious insect tends to nest in damp, poorly ventilated environments rich in organic waste. For this reason, bathrooms are among its favorite places. While it generally does not pose a serious health risk, its presence may indicate cleaning or maintenance issues that should be addressed as soon as possible.
The shower fly has a very distinctive appearance. Generally small, gray or dark brown, its wings have a texture reminiscent of a tiny moth. Unlike other flies, it does not usually fly long distances. It typically stays near pipes, damp walls, vents, or areas of condensation.
Many people first notice small insects perched on the bathroom walls or near the sink. Others smell an unpleasant odor coming from the drains and quickly discover the presence of these tiny flies. In some homes, even slow drainage can contribute to their proliferation.
