Figure skating mourns: two promising young skaters lose their lives

The world of figure skating is in deep mourning following the deaths of two young talents who, despite their different yet equally brilliant careers, left an indelible mark on the ice. Julia Marie Gaiser, 23, and Matilda Ferrari, just 15, died in separate accidents in Austria and Italy, respectively, just days apart.

Julia, born in Brixen, South Tyrol, built a career that saw her compete for both Italy and Austria. Her talent made her a key member of the Salzburg national team, with whom she won three consecutive championships in 2023, 2024, and 2025. However, her burgeoning career was unexpectedly cut short when she was struck by a truck while cycling at a busy intersection in Austria. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency services, she could not be saved.

The news resonated with the public. Neighbors and friends laid flowers and candles at the scene as a sign of mourning. Local police confirmed that the driver, a 47-year-old man, tested negative for alcohol, and the investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
